Resumo

This study aimed to analyze and characterize the infrastructure conditions for sanitation in agro-extractivist traditional communities of Ponte de Mateus e Larga in Sao Desiderio, Bahia and social participation in sanitation related public policies, based on document analysis, participatory diagnosis and interviews. The diagnosis indicated damage to the health of people in these communities by the occurrence of diseases related to poor sanitation, the prevalence of non-adoption of any water treatment and effluent disposal in the open without treatment. According to the municipal there is no project or action that includes the communities studied, as well as there is no provision for the construction of municipal basic sanitation policy. Thus, it is necessary to strengthen the social participation of the community, especially through social organizations such as the Community Association Of Residents Geraizeiros From Ponte de Mateus to establish new management partnerships with a view to the execution of public services and in the fight for rights traditional people’s health and sanitation.
