Resumo

Microcystis is a genus of cyanobacteria that can contaminate continental waters worldwide by forming blooms and producing toxins. The best-known and studied species of the genus is Microcystis aeruginosa, which may generate microcystin, a hepatotoxic peptide. For the past 40 years, discovering the factors that interfer the production of microcystin by cyanobacterias has been a great challenge. Thus, the aim of this work was to compare toxic and non-toxic strains of Microcystis aeruginosa in terms of their ability to generate toxins.
