El artículo analiza la producción de conocimientos sobre COVID-19 a partir de proyecciones sobre las tendencias de esta pandemia en África subsahariana. Una de las proyecciones más conocidas y mediáticas fue hecha por el Imperial College de Londres (ICL). La evolución de la pandemia COVID-19 en África subsahariana es coherente con las proyecciones del ICL. Sin embargo, hasta ahora ha sido una sorpresa inexplicable que los sistemas de salud de la región subsahariana, que se consideran frágiles, no se hayan derrumbado. Paradójicamente, ha sido entre los países del Norte Global, por lo tanto, entre las sociedades que tienen los medios y la capacidad institucional y las infraestructuras sanitarias que la pandemia de COVID-19 ha sido catastrófica. El análisis sugiere que la principal brecha en la proyección de la ICL en el contexto de África subsahariana está asociada con el hecho de que se basa en un marco conceptual y analítico eurocéntrico. Se sabe que en el análisis social los conceptos son sensibles a la estructura social. En consecuencia, aunque la proyección del ICL es sólida en términos metodológicos, su debilidad conceptual se observa en las discrepancias entre los datos proyectados y los datos observados en África subsahariana. Se recomienda, por lo tanto, que a pesar de las limitaciones conocidas en el modelado de fenómenos sociales, los esfuerzos en este sentido deben privilegiar el rigor conceptual en el mismo grado que privilegia la medición y la consistencia matemática del modelado.
